Shire End West - Lyme Regis, Dorset

rak architecture were appointed to develop design ideas for an extension to an attractive Grade II listed house, with wonderful local views south over Lyme Regis and The Cobb harbour area, and long distance views of Golden Cap to the east.

Our analysis of the site uncovered an historic former scullery that once stood on the site, in the same location as the intended extension.  The design evolved around the idea of weaving the clients brief in with a reincarnation of these former historic structures. The resulting design seeks to remain subservient to the original house, by creating a cluster of smaller spaces rather than one large side extension.

The design materials and detailing continues the idea of a very simple subordinate structure to the main house which echoes the historic fabric. The use of black mottled brick reflects the slate clad facades of the historic house, and the frameless glass oriel window is a direct reference to the grand original double-height, south facing, bay window of the main house.
