Stonebarrow Lodge, Charmouth , Dorset

rak architecture were appointed in September 2024 to replace the existing 1940s bungalow on the site with a sustainable low energy family home. The client brief was for a simple contextual sustainable home which optimises the incredible panoramic views of Charmouth and Lyme Regis to the north and west. The ability to integrate low carbon, lightweight  modular technologies into the design which could be partly built off site and delivered, was also a key driver for the architecture.

The design approach adopts a simple undulating gable form which draws on local barn vernacular whilst maximising  the view and opportunities for both passive solar gain and on-site renewables. The building layout and form have been carefully arranged so the  triumvirate of west facing gable forms create a series of discreet south facing roof areas which provide an excellent opportunity for a significant Photovoltaic array.

The design utilises a combination of timber cladding and  standing seam metal roof which further draws on the reference to a rustic barn vernacular. The generous west facing windows sit beneath a deep roof overhang which will both visually soften the longer views towards the home as well as  provide shade and protection from the high summer sun.

The resulting building will create a sustainable, contemporary, contextual, rural home set within a stunning cliffside location.  Dorset .residential architecture
