8DC - Charmouth
the project is a significant refurbishment and environmental upgrade of an existing 1970s family home in Charmouth. The design brief startedwith the idea of extending the property. It soon became apparent that a clever re-use of existing spaces and replanning of the house would mean that no extension was needed to meet every aspect of the brief. The design adopts an upside-down plan which allows the generous upper floor spaces to open into the roof volumes creating an airy and uplifting living space. A new two storey timber pergolastructure is introduced to the south of the building on the garden side. The pergola creates shade and solar control for new areas of glazing which enjoy wonderful views south and east over the Charmouth Coastline and all the way round to Golden Cap and beyond. The design incorporates several sustainable and environmental strategies to optimise passive solar gain in the winter and minimise the risks of summer overheating. We also introduce a new thermal overcoat and timber over cladding. The concrete pantiles of the original roof will be changed for natural weathered zinc shingles. The choice of zinc shingle was both technical and aesthetic in that it offers a decorative pattern and scale which is similar in character to the surrounding roofs with pantiles but also makes a reference to the many examples of Fish scale slate cladding we see around Charmouth and Lyme.
