The design seeks to organise the site in a way which optimises the challenging orientation, where the rear of the house looks north towards the waterfront and the front of the house looks south towards the street. The solution creates usable private gardens both sides of the main living areas, with a private sunny landscaped courtyard to the south and lawns to the north, leading to the waterfront. The house incorporates large areas of glass, creating a seamless transition between these gardens and so connecting the view and sunlight together. The cruciform plan of the home creates opportunities for both connectivity and privacy and the cornerless, frameless detailing optimises longer views out into the landscape as you move around the building. The house incorporates a variety of sustainable strategies, including a ground source heating system and heat recovery ventilation.
